Frequently Asked Questions
Read below for answers to the top frequently asked questions about pediatric dentistry.
01
What is a pediatric dentist?
A pediatric dentist is a pediatrician of teeth and oral health. Dr. My completed an additional two years of residency training after completing dental school. A pediatric dentist specializes in behavioral management, trauma management, and treatment for children with special needs and is proficient in the latest updates on Pediatric dental health. Pediatric dentists are primary and specialty oral health care providers for infants and children through adolescence.
02
When should I bring my child in for their first visit?
As recommended by AAPD, a child should see a dentist by age 1. Dr. My would love to see them when their first tooth erupts (approximately 4-6 months of age). This allows Dr. My to provide anticipatory guidance on how to care for your babies’ teeth. Also, this is an important time to discuss an introduction to solid foods and oral habits.
03
Will my special child need special dental care?
Children with special health care needs are more prone to cavities, gum disease, and dental trauma. They may require special diets, medications, or (have) oral habits that negatively impact their ability to care for their teeth properly. It's important to establish dental care early and follow it conscientiously so they can enjoy a healthy, beautiful smile.
04
How can I help my child brush his/her teeth?
* Establish a routine: expectations and schedules are key in helping your child brush daily and without too much fuss
* Helping your child brush: Until he/she can tie their own shoes, they will need some help with brushing from you.
* Make it fun: Find a favorite 2-minute song to play while they are brushing or maybe a 2-minute video on how to brush.
* Set a good example: Make it a family effort and show children that brushing and flossing daily is great for oral health.
05
Are you a fluoride-free office?
Fluoride is offered to patients seeking traditional dental care. However, for our biologically minded or curious patients, we offer alternatives to fluoride treatment, such as MI paste (Calcium Phosphate), Ozone rinses.
06
Do I need to take frequent X-rays?
We attempt to minimize the need for frequent X-rays. If behavior allows, X-rays are taken according to the ADA and AAPD guidelines and are primarily used to rule out any abnormalities and detect carious lesions that may not be revealed on visual examination. Please discuss your situation with Dr. My about your concerns, as homeopathic treatment is available following any radiation exposure. Keep in mind that with digital x-rays and technology, the dosage and use are minimal and can be discussed further during your visit.
